Emotional Support Animal Letters

Emotional Support Animal Evaluations in Texas

An emotional support animal (ESA) may provide therapeutic support for individuals experiencing certain mental health concerns. At Eseriani Wellness, emotional support animal evaluations are considered as part of a broader clinical assessment of your individual circumstances and mental health needs.

An ESA letter is not automatically provided upon request. Documentation is considered only when clinically appropriate, based on an evaluation of your circumstances, treatment needs, and whether an emotional support animal may provide therapeutic benefit.

Emotional Support Animals and Housing

Emotional support animals may be relevant to reasonable accommodation requests in housing under the federal Fair Housing Act (FHA). The FHA provides protections related to disability and reasonable accommodations in housing, including certain requests involving assistance animals.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has a different definition of a service animal. An animal whose sole role is to provide emotional support, comfort, or companionship generally does not qualify as a service animal under the ADA.

An emotional support animal letter does not guarantee approval by a landlord, housing provider, airline, or other organization. Individuals should review the requirements that apply to their specific situation.

Emotional Support Animal FAQ

What types of animals can be evaluated as emotional support animals?

At Eseriani Wellness, our licensed clinicians currently evaluate cats and dogs for emotional support animal documentation. An evaluation is based on the individual’s circumstances, mental health needs, and whether an emotional support animal may provide a therapeutic benefit.

How long does the evaluation take?

Our clinicians believe that a minimum of three sessions is appropriate to allow sufficient time to understand the client’s circumstances, assess mental health needs, and determine whether emotional support animal documentation is clinically appropriate.

When appropriate, clients may continue therapy to address ongoing mental health concerns and treatment goals beyond the evaluation process.

How much does an emotional support animal letter cost?

Eseriani Wellness does not charge a separate fee specifically for an emotional support animal letter. Clients are responsible for applicable therapy session fees, copays, coinsurance, deductibles, or other out-of-pocket costs associated with their services.

Insurance coverage varies by plan, and an emotional support animal evaluation or related documentation may not be a covered service. Clients are encouraged to verify their benefits and financial responsibility with their insurance plan before beginning services.

What happens if I do not qualify for an emotional support animal letter?

If a clinician determines that the available clinical information does not support the need for an emotional support animal or that documentation is not clinically appropriate, an ESA letter will not be provided.

The purpose of the evaluation is to make a clinical determination based on the individual’s circumstances and mental health needs, rather than to provide documentation simply because it has been requested.

Does an emotional support animal letter guarantee housing approval?

No. An emotional support animal letter does not guarantee approval of a reasonable accommodation request. Housing providers may have processes for reviewing accommodation requests, and applicable requirements can vary depending on the circumstances. The Fair Housing Act addresses reasonable accommodations involving assistance animals in housing, but an ESA letter itself does not guarantee a particular outcome.
